Regarding my problem-solving strategies, I typically rely on practical thinking and active listening. As the board runner for the surgery center at my hospital, I am responsible for ensuring the smooth flow of daily operations. My role involves coordinating the daily assignments and staffing functions of the OR suites, as well as facilitating the movement of staff, patients, surgeons, anesthesia, and cases to deliver optimal service and patient care. Problem-solving is a regular part of my work.

For instance, there was an issue with scheduling involving two of our surgeons. The new scheduler mistakenly double-booked two different procedures at the same time. Without making any assumptions, I listened to the frustrations and concerns of both surgeons. I explained the situation to each of them, noting that the scheduler was still in training and that I would address the issue. Since one of the cases was a quick and simple procedure, I allowed that surgeon to go first, with the other surgeon following. I assured them that both procedures would be completed promptly. Understanding that it is impossible to satisfy everyone, I often use practical thinking to resolve most of the issues I encounter.

As nurses, we must utilize active listening and problem-solving skills daily. Acknowledging that I cannot always please everyone, I often employ practical thinking to resolve the problems I face. By combining active listening with practical thinking, I can assess the current situation and identify an appropriate solution.
